After a pastel by Jean Etienne Liotard Count Francesco Algarotti

Count Algarotti, the son of a wealthy Venetian, was invited to visit the Chateau de Cirey because he was also interested in the work of Isaac Newton. He arrived in the fall of 1735, and stayed for six weeks.

At the time of the visit, the Count was working on a book called Newtonianism per le Dame (Newton for Women). This was a simplified explanation of Newton's work. Emilie gave Algarotti some useful suggestions for his book.
